Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Major Alliance Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant casualties.

"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political class. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
