Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
