The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Central Bank
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
