American Military Operation on Caracas Raises Anxieties of Potential Greenland Annexation.

Recent American strike in Venezuela and the detention of its president have sparked apprehension regarding America's designs on Greenland. Supporters of the ex-president's base have allegedly turned their attention to the strategically important island following the operations in the southern hemisphere.

Inflammatory Posts and Diplomatic Outrage

Only hours after the initiation of the Venezuelan operation, a prominent conservative podcaster, who is the spouse of a senior White House adviser, posted a symbolic image. The picture depicted Greenland covered in the American flag, accompanied by single-word caption: "SOON."

This blatant suggestion to absorb the resource-abundant land, which is a part of the North Atlantic alliance, triggered immediate and strong condemnation from Danish officials.

"We are strong partners and should continue to work together as such. American security is equally the Arctic's and our security," declared the Danish ambassador to the United States. "Our nation and the United States collaborate to ensure security in the North."

The ambassador further pointed out that the kingdom had substantially boosted its defence spending this year, allocating a substantial sum specifically for Arctic and regional defence. "And yes, we expect complete respect for the sovereign borders of the our realm," he added.

Political Moves and Geopolitical Goals

The tensions were additionally complicated by the recent appointment of a Southern governor as a representative to Greenland. The appointee had openly expressed gratitude to the commander-in-chief, stating it was an "honour" to serve in a unpaid capacity to "bring Greenland into the US."

After the events in Venezuela, this representative praised the administration's actions, connecting it to the wider "war on drugs."

Ever since returning to office, the US president has consistently unnerved European partners with his stated interest in Greenland. The island is considered critically important for national security and future resource extraction. It currently hosts the northernmost US air base.

Leaving the Door Open to Force

In a notable media appearance, the leader declined to exclude the resorting to armed action to gain control of Greenland. This stance comes during growing great-power rivalry in the polar region. "I don't rule it out. I don't say I'm going to do it, but I don't rule out anything... We need Greenland very badly," he remarked.

He characterized Greenland as having a "tiny amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll value them... But we need that for global security."

Growing Tensions and Local Opposition

In reaction to this persistent "rhetoric" of threats, Danish intelligence service took the unprecedented step last month of labelling the United States as a "security risk."

The prime ministers of Denmark and Greenland delivered a joint and forceful statement: "We have said it very clearly before. Now we say it again... You cannot take over other countries."

Public opinion in Greenland shows a nuanced sentiment. While a vast majority of the island's residents seek independence from Denmark, there is simultaneously little to no appetite to join the United States. The island has had the legal right to declare sovereignty for many years.

Analyst Assessment: A Credible Threat?

Military experts are increasingly reconsidering the likelihood of such a action. One policy analyst focusing in defence conceded she had previously dismissed the sabre-rattling but was "currently not so sure."

"It wouldn't be that hard for the US to deploy a couple hundred or a few thousand troops on Greenland, and it's unclear to me which power could do anything about it," she observed.
